Embarking on a global health experience is a unique and enriching opportunity that requires a deep understanding of the complex global realities when traveling abroad. The session will discuss the potential pitfalls of global health engagement, such as perpetuating power imbalances and ethical dilemmas, and provide guidance on how to navigate these challenges. It will emphasize the importance of taking a critical and reflective stance towards global health involvement, while actively challenging neocolonial approaches. Attendees will gain practical insights into selecting global health experiences and have the opportunity to participate in a reflective workshop activity designed to deepen their understanding and enhance their approach to global health.

Biography

Mariah Blevins has devoted over three years to Child Family Health International (CFHI), a nonprofit organization dedicated to transformative Global Health education, research, and thought leadership. In her role as Program Coordinator, Mariah coordinates high-quality, ethical, and appropriately scoped programs and oversees student communications and engagement. Her work with CFHI has substantially grown her passion for rewriting the narrative of global engagement. Mariah Blevins holds a Master of Public Health degree with a specialization in Health Promotion and Behavioral Sciences from San Diego State University, earned in May 2023. Recently, she has led original research in rural Baja California, focusing on factors contributing to sugar-sweetened beverage consumption and developing culturally tailored interventions for sustainable reduction. Mariah's academic and professional experiences have reinforced her commitment to global health ethics, inspiring her to continue making meaningful contributions to the field.
